Introspection and the personal

So I spent a few quiet moments in introspection today, always good, usually involving some guilt, a little pain, but then the exciting anticipation of change. I always think I should be doing much more of that.
Anyway, I read a bit in this book, written by and for The Relief Society, an organization for women in my Church. I haven't read very much and I already feel so inspired to be better. This particular quote started the self-evaluating.

Belle S. Spafford, the 9th Relief Society general president, said: "The average woman today, I believe, would do well to appraise her interests, evaluate the activities in which she is engaged, and then take steps to simplify her life, putting things of first importance first, placing emphasis where the rewards will be the greatest and most enduring, ridding herself of the less rewarding activities."
Good stuff eh? Nothing really new and earth shattering. In fact I've heard it worded different ways at least a hundred times. Prioritize and simplify. But it was very well put and I needed to hear it again. It got me thinking.

Its not like I go around doing terrible harmful things. In fact I might characterize my activities as mostly all good, but I often wonder if the good pushes out the best or most important.
I already know I won't be cutting many of those non-essential things completely out. They make me happy. I don't think its all bad to leisurely flip through a magazine, spend a few hours creating things just because they're pretty and not necessarily useful, or sometimes just veg and watch an exciting episode of Leverage.

But at this point in my life I spend all day with our girlies, and I really should take more advantage of that, to teach them openly and maybe a little more discreetly. Everyone can work on being a better example.

I am, always have been, a bit of a procrastinator. And I don't want to pass that on to my kids. So yes, I could plan ahead. I can go to bed earlier and be a little more effective and charming in the early morning hours ;). I can dedicate 20 or 30 minutes a day for some personal scripture study and personal prayer. That has just not been happening for me. Its hit and miss, and I know its important.

These are things I want to instill in my children. I want them to see what is so important to me that they wouldn't doubt where my priorities lie. To create a happy home. That I love and respect their Daddy. That I truly believe what I preach, that Heavenly Father has a plan, that prayer works, repentance is utilized, and we all have potential to do and to be great.

I hope to raise some happy, well-adjusted optimists. And I never want them to doubt in any given moment, just how loved and important each of them is in our family.
So sometimes its a little disheartening to realize how much i have to work on, but its always exciting to implement plans for improvement. After all, I'm not striving for the impossible.

Celebrating America!

We love the 4th of July. We love America and we love that we get to celebrate its independence in the middle of summer. Hooray for a warm, fun-filled holiday. We so wanted to be surrounded by our huge family all celebrating together. Such fun images I conjure up. Alas, those dreams will have to wait...
And while I often look for any excuse to throw a party this year we decided to just relax and spend the weekend celebrating and having fun with our little ones. A nice 'go with the flow' weekend. It was wonderful!

I was caught up in a picture taking mood, which I never regret. So please excuse me as I go into picture overdrive. They'll be nice to have documented in our little blog book.

Saturday night we drove out to Carlyle lake for their firework display. It was supposed to be really hot which scared away the crowds. Lucky us. It ended up being so nice. I really think we got the best seats around.
We brought frisbees, horseshoes and other games to play while we waited for it to get dark. The kids mostly played at the lake's park and down by the water instead. And even though Heath and I agreed the fireworks were the least impressive we've seen, they were beautiful out across the water.

We spent the 4th eating yummy food, playing games, and having water fights. At night we did the traditional sparklers and snaps.

This year we set up an obstacle course in our backyard. We had a blast. There were six challenges and here's how it went down...

Happy 4th of July!

A few pictures on a random day.

We've been getting some major storms here these last two weeks. They come and go so fast. So when its not storming its nice and mild. We've been enjoying a lot of outdoor time. We are lucky to be situated within walking distance of two great parks. There is a beautiful running/bike trail that leads to one. We never seem to get bored of it.

Monumental day of Saydee playing in the sand. Maybe we'll enjoy a lake day soon!

I love catching little moments like this...

Oh yes, they occasionally fight and get annoyed with each other, but it never lasts long. All three are pretty social and don't like to be alone for too long. So even when they do their own thing playing separately, they usually stay in close proximity to someone.
A little embarrassed to be caught playing in the girly room amongst mermaids and strawberry shortcakes, Tyson wanted it known he was fighting with his clone trooper guys.

I should remember my camera more often.

Father's Day

Its been pretty busy here this past month. We've jumped right into summer which means this big guy is here!

I didn't get many pictures on Father's Day this past week. It was a wonderful relaxing day. Managed to get two boys snugglesnoozing on the couch and one of the girls' Father's day gifts to Heath. They woke up super early as usual. By the time he woke up around 7:30 they had made him several little homemade treasures. They said these were for his desk at work.

Like I said this month has been pretty eventful. Recapping inevitably might get confusing. I'll get to that later.

Cars and tape.

Quite a few years ago when Tyson was Saydee's age we'd have playdates with the neighbor boys who had a rug like this one from Ikea. He loved that rug and we'd make our own versions using some string or posterboard and markers or whatever we had on hand. I wished I had thought of tape back then...

A few weeks ago friend Maria from our Texarkana days shared this idea on TheMotherHuddle.
The racing track she made for her boys was awesome. I loved her ideas for including the boats and airplanes. Creative girl that Maria.
I couldn't resist making one for the girls. We went big because we had little friends over that day. And our sweet neighborhood kids stop by alot. Big hit with all the kids... girls, boys, husbands... Kept 'em busy for quite some time.

Big enough for little people too.

It's lasted a few days now. I only give it a few more but it was worth it. Next time I'll scale back a bit. And I'm sure there will be a next time. What's a few bucks in tape and an hour of my time...

This past week.

We love these silly girls. I love that they call people, humans. As in... "Wow, there's alot of humans out here today." or "Sometimes humans are so crazy." or "Will there be alot of humans in my class?"

Soccer season ended. Saydee really enjoyed it at times. And sometimes during the game she would ask to play at the nearby playground instead. Personally I was a little disappointed I didn't see more cartwheels and handstands out there. Kids were cute though.

Heath had a birthday. The girls decorated his cake. It was a good day; we love this amazing man.

Strawberries

Went Strawberry picking this weekend. Paid $2.29 a lb, for the experience I guess. I grew up picking fruit because it was way cheaper. So it caught me by surprise to be overcharged for some semi-ripe strawberries. Probably should have waited another week or two.

Don't get me wrong we did love the experience (Heath might have a different perspective on that). And the girls ate more strawberries than they put in the box. But next time we'll probably just hit up the farmer's market.

We love strawberries, and stawberry jam maybe even more. I've tried alot of delicious homemade jam, but this recipe is by far our favorite and the easiest. A good combo right?
Here she is...

Our Aunt Allison's Strawberry freezer Jam

2 cups sugar

3 rounded tbs of clearjell

1 pkg strawberry coolaid

5 cups diced uncrushed strawberries

1/2 cup white corn syrup

Add corn syrup to strawberries. Combine all dry ingredients. Then add to the strawberry mixture. Stir really well. Done. And believe me you'll want to stock up. Good on pancakes, in shakes, straight from the iv... you get the picture.
